Abstract:

This study examines the role of traditional media as tools for effective rural development, focusing on Iwollo Oghe community in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State. While modern communication technologies like radio, television, and the internet dominate urban communication, rural communities still rely on traditional media such as the town crier, age groups, palm fronds, and talking drums. These media have proven instrumental in fostering development, preserving culture, and promoting effective communication. The study utilizes both primary and secondary data, including questionnaires distributed to 382 respondents and oral interviews conducted in the community. Data analysis reveals that traditional media remain credible, widely accepted, and vital for disseminating information tailored to rural realities. Chi-square testing of hypotheses confirms the effectiveness and credibility of these traditional methods over modern media in certain rural settings. Recommendations include integrating modern media with traditional channels to ensure participatory communication that enhances rural development. This research underscores the importance of traditional media as irreplaceable tools for sustaining cultural heritage and achieving national development goals.
