ABSTRACT:

This study investigates the common challenges faced by secondary school students in chemistry practical classes within Uhunmwonde Local Government Area, Edo State. The study involved 52 students and seven teachers, selected based on the schools’ performance in SSCE examinations from 2006 to 2009. The research was guided by four hypotheses, which were validated during the study:

  1. There is a shortage of qualified chemistry teachers in secondary schools.
  2. School laboratories are inadequately equipped.
  3. Laboratory rooms are overcrowded.
  4. Practical periods allocated on the timetable are insufficient.

The participating schools included Obadan Secondary School, Eyaen Secondary School, Egba Secondary School, Urukposa Secondary School, and Ekose Grammar School. Data were collected using questionnaires, oral interviews, and SSCE records (2006–2009). Key findings revealed the following:

  • Adequately qualified chemistry teachers significantly improve students’ performance in chemistry practicals.
  • Well-equipped chemistry laboratories enable both teachers and students to conduct practical exercises effectively.
  • Schools with adequate laboratory space and sufficient practical periods on the timetable exhibit better student performance in chemistry examinations.

Based on these findings, the study recommends that the government should prioritize the provision of adequately equipped laboratories, sufficient classroom blocks, and qualified teachers. Furthermore, the 6-3-3-4 education system should be embraced as a means of fostering technological orientation rather than merely altering subject content.
