This study examines the impact of bureaucracy on efficiency in Nigerian public enterprises, focusing on the National Electric Power Authority (NEPA), Onitsha Branch. Bureaucratic frameworks are fundamental to organizational structures, but they often present challenges that hinder efficiency and service delivery. This research identifies the extent to which bureaucratic inefficiencies affect the operations of NEPA and explores strategies for improvement. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, including questionnaires, personal interviews, and observations, targeting NEPA staff and other stakeholders. Data were systematically analyzed and presented in tabular formats to address the research questions comprehensively. Findings reveal that bureaucratic inefficiencies, characterized by excessive red tape, corruption, and administrative delays, significantly hinder NEPA’s performance and public service delivery. The research highlights historical efforts to reform public administration in Nigeria, noting that various regimes have attempted to eradicate inefficiencies with limited success. Recommendations include adopting streamlined administrative processes, enhancing accountability mechanisms, and fostering a culture of professionalism within public enterprises. The study underscores the need for structural and attitudinal reforms to align Nigeria’s public bureaucracy with global best practices, ensuring sustainable development and improved service delivery.
