Effective communication is foundational to the advancement and cohesion of any society. In developing countries such as Nigeria, communication remains vital to national development, social integration, and political awareness. However, the communication sector in many developing nations continues to face significant challenges stemming from economic constraints, infrastructural deficits, and technological underdevelopment. This paper explores the multifaceted problems affecting communication in Nigeria, analysing how these limitations hinder effective message dissemination, media development, and public engagement. The study highlights key issues such as inadequate funding, poor regulatory frameworks, limited access to communication technologies, and inconsistent power supply, all of which contribute to a fragile communication infrastructure. Furthermore, it examines the sociopolitical influences that distort the flow of accurate and unbiased information, including censorship, press suppression, and media ownership monopolies. These challenges affect professional communicators and impede the public’s right to access credible information. This work is intended to serve as a valuable resource for students of communication, media professionals, and policymakers. By identifying the root causes of Nigeria’s communication challenges, the paper offers practical insights for strengthening the communication industry through improved policies, investment in digital infrastructure, and enhanced training for media practitioners. In doing so, it advocates for a communication system that empowers development, democratic participation, and social enlightenment.
