ABSTRACT

This study investigates the competencies required by secretaries in secondary schools within Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, focusing on communication and computer skills essential for effective performance. The research involved 30 secretaries from 21 secondary schools, and data were collected through a structured, validated questionnaire. Two primary research questions guided the study: (1) What communication skills are required by secretaries? (2) What computer skills are essential for their roles? The findings revealed that oral communication skills are crucial for secretaries to interact effectively, while written communication, including good grammar, vocabulary, and spelling, is also essential. Additionally, interpersonal communication skills help secretaries build positive relationships within the school environment. Furthermore, secretaries must be proficient in using word processing, transcription, and spreadsheet software, as these are central to their administrative tasks. Document management skills were also identified as a critical competency for maintaining organizational effectiveness. This study underscores the evolving role of secretaries in secondary schools and highlights the importance of continuous skill development in communication and technology to meet the demands of modern administrative tasks.
