ABSTRACT:

This research investigates the role of Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in combating corruption, a pervasive issue undermining the nation’s development since its independence. Corruption has long plagued Nigeria’s institutions, stifling governance and economic progress, with disastrous impacts on public resources and societal trust. The paper examines the historical context of corruption in Nigeria, from colonial legacies to contemporary governance challenges, and assesses the EFCC’s efforts in addressing this issue. The study evaluates the agency’s formation, objectives, and performance in combating corruption under the administrations of Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. Through a combination of primary and secondary research, including interviews, observations, and analysis of existing literature, this work appraises the effectiveness of the EFCC in achieving its mandate. It explores whether the agency’s initiatives have successfully curbed corruption or if systemic issues remain entrenched. Findings suggest that while the EFCC has made significant strides, challenges persist due to weak governance structures, public apathy, and entrenched corruption. This research contributes to understanding the dynamics of anti-corruption efforts in Nigeria and the broader implications for governance and development in sub-Saharan Africa.
