This study examines the influence of the environmental sanitation program on the lives of people in Igbara-Odo Local Government Area of Ekiti State, Nigeria. Recognizing the significance of proactive health measures, the local government adopted a self-help approach to addressing environmental health challenges. This initiative aims to minimize healthcare costs and make health practices more relatable and impactful for the community. The study explores the program’s effects on the physical, psychological, sociological, and economic well-being of the residents. Data were collected from 300 participants across 15 areas in Ekiti State, including members of the local sanitation task force. Random sampling was employed to select 20 respondents from each sub-area. Using questionnaires, oral interviews, documentary evidence, and participant observations, the findings revealed that the environmental sanitation program has significantly improved community health and well-being. Key contributions include enhanced physical cleanliness, psychological health, social cohesion, and economic development. The study recommends that communities adopt similar participatory sanitation initiatives, emphasizing collective responsibility for environmental health. Additionally, involving children at an early age is encouraged to instill lifelong habits and promote a culture of cleanliness, aligning with the vision of “health for all people.
