This research explores the significance of Pidgin English as a medium of communication in broadcasting, with a focus on its adoption in Enugu State Broadcasting Service (ESBS), Enugu. Originating during the colonial era as a simplified version of English, Pidgin English has evolved into a lingua franca that bridges the gap between Nigeria’s diverse ethnic and linguistic groups. The study examines its effectiveness in disseminating information to a broad audience, including both literate and illiterate populations, by overcoming barriers posed by standard English.
Through surveys and interviews with ESBS staff and mass communication students, the research identifies the widespread acceptance and comprehension of Pidgin English among listeners and viewers. It highlights its role in fostering inclusivity, sustaining audience interest, and enhancing message clarity, particularly for rural and semi-literate populations. Despite its perceived informality, the findings emphasize that Pidgin English is instrumental in achieving the objectives of broadcasting, such as informing, educating, and entertaining audiences.
The study concludes with recommendations to further integrate Pidgin English into media content to promote cultural relevance, inclusivity, and effective communication in Nigeria. This research underscores its value as a practical tool for uniting audiences across socio-economic and linguistic divides.
