This study critically examines the influence of untrained teachers on the academic performance of secondary school students within selected institutions in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria. Despite ongoing efforts to improve education quality, many schools continue to employ individuals lacking formal pedagogical training. This trend raises concerns about its implications for student learning outcomes, academic motivation, and the broader educational system. Using a descriptive survey research design, the study posed five guiding questions to investigate the perceived impact of untrained teachers on students, school calendars, and academic performance. It also explored students’ awareness of the causes of untrained teacher employment and the role of government in this issue. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire comprising fifteen items, administered to a sample of 100 respondents drawn from three prominent secondary schools in the area: Emotan Secondary School, Idia College, and Imaguero College. Findings suggest that untrained teachers significantly contribute to poor academic performance, disrupt school schedules, and reduce the overall quality of instruction. Furthermore, respondents believe that systemic issues, including policy gaps and recruitment challenges, contribute to the persistence of this problem. The study underscores the urgent need for educational reform, particularly in teacher recruitment, training, and professional development, to enhance learning outcomes.
