This study critically evaluates the role of pipeline transportation in the marketing and distribution of petroleum products in Nigeria, with a specific focus on the operations of the Pipelines and Products Marketing Company (PPMC) Limited, Enugu. The objective was to assess the effectiveness, efficiency, and challenges of pipeline systems within the petroleum distribution network. A total of 83 staff members from Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) offices in Enugu and Port Harcourt were randomly selected as respondents. Data collection was conducted using structured questionnaires, and the results were analysed to test four hypotheses central to the study.
The findings revealed that pipeline transportation significantly enhances the efficient distribution and marketing of petroleum products, reducing operational and logistics costs across the value chain. However, pipeline vandalism emerged as a critical barrier undermining its full potential. The study also found that preventive security measures, such as alarm systems and coordinated police patrols, could effectively mitigate the risk of vandalism.
In conclusion, while pipelines remain vital to Nigeria’s petroleum marketing infrastructure, addressing security concerns is crucial for sustained efficiency. The study recommends increased government intervention and technological investment to safeguard this critical national asset.
