This study investigates the relevance of Social Studies as a core subject in junior secondary schools, using selected institutions in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State as a case study. Social Studies plays a pivotal role in shaping students’ understanding of societal values, civic responsibilities, and national development. The research aimed to determine the perceived benefits of teaching the subject, evaluate the adequacy of instructional materials, and assess teacher motivation in delivering the curriculum. Data collection methods included structured questionnaires and oral interviews, targeting sixty respondents, comprising students and educators. The research was guided by key questions such as: What are the educational and social benefits of teaching Social Studies? Are instructional materials sufficient and effectively utilised? Are teachers adequately motivated and supported to teach the subject? Using simple percentage analysis, the findings revealed that Social Studies contributes significantly to the personal and social development of students, especially in fostering civic responsibility, cultural awareness, and national consciousness. However, the study also uncovered challenges such as insufficient teaching materials and a lack of teacher motivation. Based on these findings, the study recommends improved resource allocation, continuous teacher training, and policy support to enhance the effective teaching and relevance of Social Studies in junior secondary education.
