Abstract:

This study explores the role of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in preventing bank failures, focusing on strategies and measures to ensure financial stability in the banking sector. Bank failures in Nigeria have historically eroded public confidence and disrupted economic growth. The research examines the effectiveness of CBN interventions, including collaboration with the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), regulatory enforcement, and supervisory mechanisms. Data collection involved primary and secondary sources, including interviews, surveys, and a review of financial reports. Analysis using the chi-square method revealed critical factors contributing to bank failures, such as poor asset management, political instability, inadequate legal frameworks, and insider fraud. The study also highlights the significant impact of CBN’s preventive measures, including on-site examinations, moral suasion, and debt recovery initiatives, in stabilizing the banking system. Recommendations include enhancing collaboration between the CBN and NDIC, improving regulatory frameworks, and increasing transparency within banking institutions. The research concludes that while bank failures cannot be entirely eliminated, proactive measures by the CBN can significantly minimize their occurrence, thereby fostering confidence and stability in Nigeria’s financial system.
