This study critically evaluates the essential role of the press in promoting and sustaining democracy in Nigeria, with a focus on public perception and press performance. The research adopts a mixed-method approach, combining a detailed literature review and empirical field data collected via structured questionnaires and interviews from 80 respondents, including lecturers, lawyers, politicians, and citizens in Enugu. Guided by democratic theory, the study explores how the press influences democratic engagement, educates the electorate, safeguards citizens’ rights, and acts as a watchdog against government excesses. Findings reveal that a majority of respondents consider the press indispensable to a functioning democracy, especially in terms of informing and educating the populace during elections. However, concerns persist regarding press freedom, as respondents cite government intolerance, censorship, and legal constraints as major impediments to independent journalism in Nigeria. Despite these challenges, the Nigerian press is praised for its responsible and courageous efforts in advocating for transparency and democratic values. The study concludes with recommendations that include expanding media coverage beyond urban elites, promoting national unity over ethnic division, and reforming restrictive laws that hinder press freedom. Ultimately, the press remains a critical pillar for democratic development and good governance in Nigeria.
