AN EVALUATION OF STAFF AND MANPOWER TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIAN ORGANIZATIONS:  A STUDY OF NIGERIA PORT AUTHORITY LAGOS STATE

This research evaluates the role of staff training and development in enhancing organizational effectiveness within Nigerian service organizations, with a specific focus on the Nigeria Port Authority (NPA) in Lagos State. The study aims to assess how training and development programs are conducted and their impact on employee performance and productivity. The primary objective is to highlight the benefits of human resource development and propose recommendations for improving existing training programs to maximize their effectiveness. Data for the study were collected using both primary and secondary sources, with a sample size of 154 employees selected from a total staff population of 250. A descriptive research methodology was employed, and Chi-square statistical analysis was used to test the validity of the hypothesis. The findings indicate that staff training and development programs significantly improve employee performance, job satisfaction, and overall productivity. Based on these results, the study recommends that the NPA, as well as other organizations, implement strategies to ensure effective communication regarding available training programs, both internal and external, and encourage greater staff participation. The research underscores the importance of continuous training and development for improving organizational outcomes and enhancing employee skill sets.
